It’s seen better days for sure. “The World’s Most Famous Beach”—a sign at the main entrance along Atlantic Ave.—a sign of lives lived. But the motels are there, struggling. Like the families who still travel the meandering interstate to arrive by five Friday. To watch the mullet nets twirling down the strong pier walls; for when there’s mullet, there might be more. Hoping for a shark but it might be seatrout or drum. Park the car just past the volleyball net where the family from Indiana is playing. Sand? Keep going. Straight. Straight. Look right there, right after that black SUV swarmed with worn aluminum chairs. A mini grill, too. Hey, we’re still on the interstate. “Stay away from that pier boys. Whack this board and you ain’t gettin’ another.” Buy a root beer and rent a folding chair. “Look at all the flags!”
